Important Announcement: What This Means for You as Windows 10 Support Ends in 2025

Is your computer currently running the Windows 10 operating system? You might want to keep in mind that on October 14, 2025, Microsoft will stop providing support for the Home and Professional editions of Windows 10. Unlike when Microsoft ended support for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, those running older computer hardware (7th Gen Intel processors, or older) won’t be able to simply upgrade to the next operating system. We'll explain what this means to you and how to get ready for the upcoming change in this article.

Windows 10 End of Support 2025The Meaning of "End of Support"

After October 14, 2025, Windows 10 Home and Pro will no longer be eligible for new security patches, non-security updates, free or paid choices for aided support, or online technical material upgrades. This is referred to as “end of support”. In essence, your Windows 10 device will continue to work, but Microsoft will no longer provide support, potentially leaving your system open to future threats.

What can you do?

There are a few possibilities for those who use secondhand computers to think about:

Option 1: Upgrade to Windows 11

Windows 11 is the latest operating system version offered by Microsoft, and it already has more features and improvements than Windows 10. If your existing device is a more modern model (running an 8th Gen Intel processor, or newer), it could be able eligible to upgrade to Windows 11 for free.

Option 2: Purchase a Reconditioned Computer with a Newer OS

If your present device cannot run Windows 11 or another modern operating system, think about purchasing a reconditioned computer that has a newer operating system already on it. At Australian Computer Traders, we offer a wide variety of quality & affordable refurbished laptops and desktop computers that run Windows 11.

Option 3: Change Your Operating System

Depending on your usage, you might want to think about switching to a different operating system, such as Linux. Many user-friendly Linux distributions can breathe fresh life into older and/or outdated gear. Linux can easily be installed on just about any computer from the last 10+ years, and most Linux operating systems are free (General Public License) Visit the following link to view a List of Free GNU/Linux Distributions.

Windows 10 isn’t the only Microsoft product that will lose support in 2025. If you’re currently using any of the Microsoft products listed within the tablet below, it’s our opinion that you should start to think about upgrading to the latest versions, or transitioning to new alternative products.

We understand that it's not always easy to switch to new software, or always affordable to upgrade your perfectly functioning hardware due to software limitations. However, this End of Support era makes an important milestone and gives customers a chance to evaluate their IT needs and make future plans coming up to the end of Windows 10 support. It can be very exciting to upgrade to the latest and greatest software packages, and rest assured that our team are here to help if you have any questions during the transition process.
